Provence Promotion Organizing the Euro-Mediterranean Medical Device Workshop in San Diego
07 December 2010 - 08 December 2010 / Biotechnologie, Technologies Médicales

The third edition of this international event

For the third year in a row, Provence promotion is organizing a seminar in San Diego in partnership with Team Côte d’Azur, Eurobiomed and French BioBeach, being held this year on December 7 and 8.

The Provence region’s medical device sector is taking pride of place
For this edition, the spotlight is on medical devices, with a program including presentations by experts from the institutional and business sectors who will be testifying to the Provence region’s dynamism and the opportunities available for R&D projects.
Among the speakers will be the physician Prof. Paul Lecoq of the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). A pioneer in the field of medical imaging and a fervent advocate of technology transfers, the professor is behind the creation of the CERIMED (European Center for Research into Medical Imaging) in Marseilles. His presentation will focus on public-private partnerships in R&D.

Alain CORNIL of EKKYO also will be speaking on the theme “Innovation in laser medicine thanks to Provence’s photonics expertise”. EKKYO has developed the world’s first laser-assisted scar healing system. Surgeons in Europe have been using the technique in operating theaters and medical centers since 2008.

PROTOMED is a biomedical engineering company that develops products used in the design, development and testing of innovative medical devices, mainly with cardiovascular applications. The company has set up a unique platform for accelerating development cycles and validating new products. PROTOMED’s Karim MOUNEIMNE will be presenting his views on how to give a new impetus to R&D projects in the medical devices field in Europe.

A round table on the theme of “The Euro-Mediterranean region: a new center of attraction for the medical technology industry” will close the seminar.

A partnership strategy supported by Provence Promotion
In the biotechnology sector, a partnership was set up at the beginning of 2009 with the French Bio Beach association based in the San Diego region of the United States, home of one of the three major biotechnology clusters in the country. As part of this partnership, Provence Promotion, together with the Nice economic development agency and Eurobiomed, organizes twice-yearly workshops in San Diego with companies from the Provence region to promote the local “biotech” industry in California.

These workshops are features of Provence Promotion’s ongoing strategy with regard to partnerships, a strategy further underlined by the business development mission to Hyderabad (India) last June and the subsequent contacts established with the Euro-Indian health cluster Biogenesis.

All these events contribute to enhancing the international recognition of our region’s expertise and know-how and to identifying opportunities for developing R&D projects.
